PhD position on compound extreme events, JLU Giessen, Germany
The Centre for International Development and Environmental Research at the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen, Germany, has an opening for 1 PhD position (50%, 36 months with the possibility to extend for two more years, E13 TV-H, reference is made to § 65 HHG).

The successful candidate will analyse compound weather and climate extreme events in new high resolution paleo model runs of the past 2000 years in combination with subdaily to seasonal observational data (station and gridded products) as well as future projections and estimate their impacts on human and natural systems across the Mediterranean. The PhD position is supervised by Prof. J. Luterbacher and Dr. E. Xoplaki.
Specific tasks:
  • Work towards modeling and evaluating compound extreme weather and climate events across different time and space scales in the Mediterranean. Sophisticated new methods including machine learning will be developed to predict temporal and spatial patterns. The full range of spatial (local to entire Mediterranean) and temporal (subdaily to multidecadal) scales will be considered using observational data, paleoclimate information (natural proxies and documentary evidence, climate reconstructions and new high resolution paleo models) as well as new projections across the Mediterranean region.
  • Process understanding of the occurrence of various compound extremes that led to historically documented and recent impacts on ecology, infrastructure, health and agriculture including the application of the resilience approach.
  • Detection and attribution studies on compound extremes across a suite of climate models.
  • 2 hours teaching per week during the semester within the transitional management Master studies on a topic of choice (geostatistics, programming, climate dynamics, etc)
  • Participation in the preparation of interdisciplinary research proposals and support in the continuation of ongoing projects.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
The successful candidate will join a small international and interdisciplinary team led by Dres. J. Luterbacher and E. Xoplaki working on various aspects of past, present and future climate change and impacts across the Mediterranean. The PIs will try to get additional funding to increase the level of employment.
For further information about the position, please contact Prof. J. Luterbacher <mailto:juerg.luterbacher@geogr.uni-giessen.de>.
Required skills:
The applicant must hold a university degree (MSc. or equivalent) in climate sciences, geo or environmental sciences, physics, applied mathematics, statistics.
Applicants should have proven competence in programming and knowledge in the field of model data evaluation and handling large amounts of meteorological/climatological data; organisational and communicative skills; team orientation and very good knowledge of the English language.
Please send your application preferably in one single .pdf file (containing a max 1 page motivation letter, CV, two reference persons and copies of the Master diploma) to the PI Prof. Luterbacher <mailto:juerg.luterbacher@geogr.uni-giessen.de> with reference number 686/00909/Z addressed to:
